okay.
honestly.
don't people have better things to do than argue with me about music? first of all, when they argue with me it's like they're trying to convince me that music like rock, rap, or r&b or whatever is GOOD, whereas what I'M rebutting with are the reasons i don't like listening to it. the arguments we use could be used in either situation, arguing the validity of the music or arguing why we enjoy/don't enjoy it, but when the two sides are arguing about two different things, there is only chaos that doesn't reap progress.
basically, it's a well-known fact among my close friends that, in general, i really can't stand listening to anything but country/blue grass, film scores, disney, bing crosby, christmas music, and classical music. this means that i don't like rock, r&b, rap, ska, and anything else that's not what i listed before.
dislike #1: rock. the instrumentation and subjects of rock songs. well for one, i have a bit of trouble sometimes listening to music with words, especially words i can't understand. i think it's a waste of verbal energy and effort on my part to listen to it, in short, the rock song is wasting my time. i hate the instrumentation of rock songs, and that's just not something you can change. in essence, i hate the part of rock that makes rock what it is, and there's nothing that can change my mind. i don't like how the emotions displayed by rock artists are, well not limited, but concentrated more towards anger, loud triumph, sadness, confusion, rebellion, all things that i try to avoid for the most part. i don't blame the artists--the instrumentation of rock, the electric guitars, the drum set, the electric bass, and at times the acoustic bass and acoustic guitars, plus whatever else the group decides to use, the electric keyboard or whatever, they're just not designed to express the emotions that i like associating myself with.
dislike #2: r&b.simple reason. i think it doesn't take talent, and for that reason, it's hard for me to respect r&b music. most of the r&b songs i know don't have complex key signatures or modulations, and the vocals are often overly synthesized. if i listen to the artist live, which i never would do anyway, i imagine he or she would be pretty out of tune...r&b, at least to me, are just nursery rhymes revamped for older people.
dislike #3: ska .alright this dislike is a bit of stretch admittedly, but this dislike is more of a "it's me, not you" thing. i think the instrumentation of ska music is highly similar to that of a mariachi band. and growing up in a house with a small bit of mexican culture, i can't stand mariachi bands. they annoy the hell out of me. ska music ultimately puts me in a terrible mood, and i don't understand why people expect me to subject myself to that. i dislike how at times the lyrics are utterly ridiculous, it's like the musicians don't care and they don't respect music and how much it has been developed from ancient times.
dislike #4: rap.now this is possibly the height of my snobbery when it comes to my dislikes. i can't stand rap because rap artists
don't have a pitch. music, by definition, is organized noise, organized into recognizable pitches and set apart by the timbre. to me, rap isn't music. end of that story.
dislike #5: any other genre i'm missing.probably one of the previous reasons stated before.
i'm a musical purist. i don't even like the beatles. i hate when musicians write songs that "express themselves." mozart and many composers from the past expressed themselves with sooo much more expert subtlety while still writing things that the audience liked. they didn't have to scream in order to express anger. beethoven's moonlight sonata, 1st movement, expresses more sorrow without words than any rock musician.
in a way, i have a more personal reason for disliking these genres, especially rock. a few years ago, i was trying to be someone in order to fit in, and i would listen to stuff like rock, the beatles, r&b, rap (eminem kill me now) in an attempt to fit in.
um no longer? i can't stand that person. i know what i like, and i can't stand when people take time out of their lives to try to convince me that i'm WRONG. excuse me. there are so many other things they should be focusing on. listening to that kind of music just makes me feel dirty and fake. i know that at times i can be insufferable about it, but honestly, these are circumstances that nobody can change. it amuses me when various people attempt to find a song in those genres that i would like, and i mean, i appreciate their effort, but i kind of smile in that "you're wasting your time" kind of way.
like #1: classical music. following along that "i'm a musical purist" bit, how much more pure can music get than classical music. these are the guys that started it, the musical theory, the chord progressions, they laid down the standards for virtuosos and masters. if the most famous rock musicians tried to play the most advanced classical pieces in standard repertoire, they would failsauce. even vocal,choral classical music emphasizes INTONATION. i love classical music because impeccable intonation is a mark of an accomplished musician. if a classical musician doesn't have impeccable intonation, then he WORKS on it, rather than spitting on the music he's trying to play. ugh.
like #2: disney.it's a matter of childhood, reverting back to simpler times, where the music isn't heavy, it's just...there. it doesn't have undertones, and if it does, those undertones don't concern me, and they're amusing and laden with history. i can become braindead when listening to disney music, enjoying it because the songs sound nice and they're carefree, something people need every once in a while. disney music shows me that not everything has to have a meaningful message interlaced in its notes.
like #3: country music. this one didn't come around until recently. i actually like the instrumentation of country music. i greatly enjoy how emphases are put on the subject matter of the song, and how the songs are about love, America, soldiers, family, and things that i actually care about. i like the way the songs sound AND the lyrics, which rarely ever happens. plus i think the accents are adorable. people would be hard-pressed to find a country song i don't like. not only that, but country artists aren't constantly trying to be existential when delivering their messages, screwing up their voices like john mayer or mariah carey or like screamo (don't get me started on screamo). their voices are purer, they don't have to hide behind their emotions, they work with them, and they aren't screwing it up by trying to sound like a dying chicken.
like #4: bing crosby.his voice just makes me happy. he's a crooner, and not like the pathetic way clay aiken is a crooner, he's a for-serious when you listen to him, he's crooning to you. that's what i love about bing crosby.
like #5: film scores.when i listen to classical music too much, they all start to sound the same. for a while i was at a loss of what to do, but then i discovered film scores. film scores are by far my favorite music genre. there are classics like star wars, indiana jones, the good the bad and the ugly, fantastic scores like that. they tell a story without words, they depict emotions, and they have variety and often times are genius. they just....exist, they
are. there are no words to get in the way, there is a music for every occasion. it's comforting. i never get tired of them. there's no way i can. they are the epitome of music mimicking life. it's excellent.
in short what i really want to say is, people, please get off my back. i just don't like these music, and i love
this music. i'm not saying i think they're BAD, sure, eric clapton and jimmy hendrix whoever the hell is plenty good, whatever, different strokes for different folks, i just don't like the way he sounds, and that's not something i can change. i will wrinkle my nose when i listen to them, just as you wrinkle your nose if you don't like tomatoes and there are tomatoes in your burger, or you don't like the smell of fuschias and you smell fuschias. it's me, hearing something i don't like, it's just one of the five senses, and it's not something i enjoy,
so what. please please just
leave me alone about it.
